A Viper entered a carpenter's shop, and went from one to another of the tools, begging for something to eat. Among the rest, he addressed himself to the File, and asked for the favors of a meal. The File replied in a tone of pitying contempt, "What a simpleton you must be if you imagine you will get anything from me, who invariably take from everyone and never give anything in return."

マムシとヤスリ

ある日、一匹のマムシが大工の仕事場に忍び込みました。マムシは道具たちの間をまわり、何か食べるものをくれないかと片っ端から頼んで歩きました。
ついにマムシはヤスリの前に来ると、自分に食事を恵んでくれないかと願い出ました。すると、ヤスリは哀れみと軽蔑の入り混じった声でこう答えました。
「おまえはなんておめでたい奴なんだ。私から何かをもらえるなんて思っているのか？ 私はね、いつだって誰からも削り取るばかりで、自分から何かを与えることなんて一度もないんだよ。」
